Cap and Trim

A decorative, practical option that adds durability

A cap and trim fence is an attractive wood fence option that provides a more refined look and a secure-looking design compared to a traditional wood privacy fence.

Unlike a regular privacy fence where the pickets are exposed at the top, a cap and trim fence conceals the tops of the pickets with a piece of trim on each side. The extra flat piece of wood at the very top of the fence serves as the decorative “trim” and “cap” which makes the fence look more finished, sturdy and smooth. The pickets are centered with the fence post, allowing the post to be visible on either side of the fence.

If your yard has a steeper slope, the cap and trim can be stair-stepped to achieve the same effect. A lattice can be added, for

Benefits

  • Enhanced Aesthetics

    • The cap and trim design gives your fence a finished look, making it more visually appealing.

  • Moisture Protection:

    • The top cap shields the pickets from rain and moisture, prolonging the fence’s lifespan.

  • Durability:

    • Cap and trim fences are more robust due to the added protection and support.

  • Stability:

    • Optional center wood rails can enhance stability, especially in windy conditions.

  • Good Neighbor Option:

    • In a “good neighbor fence,” the middle rail is placed on the inside, creating a smooth picket surface visible to neighbors.

  • Customization:

    • You have flexibility in choosing the placement of support rails and trim pieces.

    • Decorative post caps and unique trim cuts allow for personalization.

Picket Fence

Picket fences are characterized by their evenly spaced vertical boards, known as pickets, attached to horizontal rails. They are typically shorter in height (2-5 feet) and offer a decorative boundary rather than privacy. A warm and welcoming picket fence helps a historical home stand out.

Advantages of a Picket Fence

  • Adds charm and curb appeal to the property

  • Defines boundaries without completely blocking views

  • Allows airflow through the gaps between pickets.
